FSC certification

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international, independent, not-for-profit, membership-based organisation.

The FSC was founded in 1993 in response to the Rio Earth Summit to promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world’s forests.

It provides:

  • standards for responsible forest management through 10 Principles of Responsible Forest Management (available from the FSC website http://www.fsc.org)
  • annual auditing by accredited certification bodies to ensure compliance with these standards
  • brand credibility through a ‘chain of custody’ system that tracks timber from the forest to the end consumer
  • a distinctive trademark for buyers of forest products
  • a governance structure that ensures the organisation is independent of any one interest group.

FSC provides an ethical certification system for in excess of 84 million hectares of forest worldwide with more than 5,400 participating companies.
